Berkeley police interrupt sex crime caught live on camera

An Oakland man was arrested over the weekend after being caught on camera taking advantage of a heavily intoxicated woman in Berkeley, police report.

Early Sunday morning, the security monitoring company for the apartment complex at 1950 Addison St. called BPD to report a man and woman in a common area at about 2:20 a.m. and a sexual assault in progress, Berkeley police said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

The woman appeared to be drunk and passed out and the man was groping her, the monitoring company told police.

When officers arrived, they detained the man, who was identified as 23-year-old Zhe Wang of Oakland, according to booking records and police.

Wang was arrested on suspicion of three felony sex crimes, including sexual battery of an unconscious person and sexual penetration of a victim who is incapable of consent, according to booking records.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospital, police said.

As of Tuesday morning, Wang remained in custody at Berkeley Jail, according to booking records.

He was being held on $150,000 bail and is scheduled for arraignment Thursday morning at Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

Zhe Wang's booking photograph was unavailable due to the ongoing investigation, Berkeley police said.
