A woman in her 50s was taken to Highland Hospital on Sunday with a skull fracture after being struck by a driver in a Berkeley crosswalk, authorities report.

The crash happened shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday at Shattuck and University avenues. The driver remained at the scene.

Berkeley police said the driver, who was in a gray Prius registered to a San Francisco address, was turning left onto University from southbound Shattuck and struck a woman who was walking across the street.

The pedestrian, who had been northbound in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection, was on the ground bleeding from the head when the Berkeley Fire Department arrived, according to emergency traffic reviewed by The Scanner.

The woman was talking and alert but did have major head injuries, police said.

The woman was taken Code 3 — with emergency lights and sirens — to Highland Hospital for treatment.
