Back-to-back armed robberies at Berkeley shops on University

Robberies in Berkeley are up 23% compared to last year, with more than 300 robberies in 2023, according to BPD data.

Men with a gun robbed two late-night Berkeley businesses on University Avenue on Wednesday night.

Police are looking into whether the incidents are related due to their similar descriptions, close timing and geographic proximity.

The first armed robbery took place at 7-Eleven at University and Sacramento Street just after 11:20 p.m., Berkeley police said. 

The next took place just after 11:25 p.m. at The One, a smoke shop at 1019 University, at 10th Street.

In each incident, two men with a gun took cash from the shop clerk, Berkeley police said. 

Witnesses said the first robbery, at 7-Eleven, involved two Black men, 19-20 years old, in a dark BMW or Mercedes. One of the men wore a gray hoodie and gray pants. The other was in a hoodie and jeans.

The second robbery involved two Black men in ski masks in a black BMW with tinted windows.
