Berkeley High parents are calling for changes after a series of attacks and fights Friday as the school's Unity Week wrapped up.

Multiple parents have contacted The Scanner about one incident in particular, in which a 14-year-old autistic student was attacked by a group of about a dozen boys, some wearing masks, who kicked and punched him, and pelted him with eggs.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a concussion, multiple sources familiar with the situation said.

Other students watched or filmed the attack, although some were clearly disturbed, asking, in one video: "Why would they do that? What are they doing?"

Many of the incidents took place Friday in [downtown Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/downtown-berkeley/), not far from the [Berkeley High campus](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-high-school/).

One BHS mother said a female student was taken to the hospital after someone poured bleach on her and that there were multiple fights in addition to the one that left a boy with a concussion.

She witnessed several of the incidents herself and heard about others later.

"It was really scary," she said. "I had no idea."

She said the atmosphere on campus had been calm and orderly, a stark contrast to what she witnessed downtown.

Now, she's urging police and school authorities to work together to improve student safety during Unity Week.

"There are many other stories and cases of those who are targeted simply because they are walking alone, look young, or have special needs," she told police, school and city officials by email. "In some cases, those targeted aren't even students, but pedestrians or unhoused individuals. This can be particularly frightening for new freshmen and the families of incoming freshmen who have no idea how intense and violent these days become. Had I known in advance, I would have kept my son home, since clearly students are not safe off campus during these days."

She said the school board president had already promised to respond and that she also planned to meet with the school superintendent.

"We need to come together to collaborate," she told The Scanner on Monday. "I'm not interested in blaming anybody."

As of Monday afternoon, parents said they had received no message from Berkeley High's principal about Friday's events.

Berkeley Unified has not responded to requests from The Scanner for information.

Berkeley High's Safety Committee is set to meet Tuesday, although Friday's events are [not on the agenda](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iOHUh033ZboRNfehrj3cgb8rAsh3rwMEJdplPWpQDTk/edit?tab=t.0&ref=berkeleyscanner.com), which was finalized before the incidents. Community members can raise additional concerns during public comment.

[Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) confirmed they were aware of the attack on the student but provided few details, saying the incident remains under investigation as officers work to identify those involved.

Details about Friday's police response and calls for service were not immediately available. The Scanner has requested additional information.
