# Suspect arrested in hit-and-run of Spanish grandparents

The man police say struck two grandparents visiting from Barcelona [in a Berkeley crosswalk](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2026/10/08/traffic-safety/seniors-major-injuries-hit-run-crash-berkeley/) last week has been arrested, authorities said.

The driver, who fled the scene, was identified as 22-year-old Farhan Ayubi of Richmond, police said Tuesday.

The grandparents, a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, remain in the hospital.

Family members have now traveled from Spain to help with the couple's recovery, which is expected to take a long time.

The couple was in a crosswalk at University Avenue and Eighth Street when a [driver struck them Wednesday](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2026/10/08/traffic-safety/seniors-major-injuries-hit-run-crash-berkeley/) shortly before 9 p.m.

Ayubi was arrested Tuesday morning on suspicion of two counts of felony hit-and-run resulting in injury.

**Update, 4 p.m.** BPD added the following in a prepared statement Thursday.

> An alert witness followed the suspect vehicle as it left the area and provided investigators with a description. Working collaboratively and using multiple investigative resources — including Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology in Berkeley and Emeryville, security footage from nearby businesses, and Berkeley’s fixed surveillance cameras —investigators identified the suspect as Farhan Ayubi, 22, of Richmond.

> On October 13th, investigators from the department’s Homicide/Felony-Assault Unit and the Fatal Accident Investigation Team arrested the suspect in the City of El Cerrito for his arrest warrant.

Ayubi is being held at Berkeley Jail with arraignment set for Thursday, according to booking records.
