# Homeless woman attacked with bat near UC Berkeley

A homeless woman in her 50s was attacked this week in Berkeley by someone wielding a baseball bat, sending her to the hospital.

Authorities say the attack happened in the 2400 block of Channing Way, in the [Southside](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/southside-berkeley/) neighborhood near [UC Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/uc-berkeley-crime/).

The woman, who was struck multiple times and sustained a broken arm, went to the hospital for medical care Thursday. 

She said the incident happened sometime the prior night, [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) said in response to a Scanner inquiry.

The hospital [called BPD at 10:40 p.m.](https://berkeleycrime.com/i/id/609fe42f-2602-44aa-9f23-0b1a0ca65549?ref=berkeleyscanner.com) Thursday to report the attack.

As of Friday, no arrests had been made and the investigation was ongoing, police said.

Berkeley has had about [130 felony assaults](https://bpd-transparency-initiative-berkeleypd.hub.arcgis.com/pages/crimes?ref=berkeleyscanner.com#cknad003o) this year compared to a similar number last year over the same period, according to BPD data.

Felony assault reports overall have been on the decline in Berkeley since a peak of 215 in 2022.
