# Berkeley police respond to stabbing on Sterling

A man in his 50s was taken to the hospital after being stabbed in the head and bitten at his [Berkeley Hills](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-hills/) home Saturday, authorities report.

Multiple readers asked The Scanner about a large emergency response in the 1100 block of Sterling Avenue, near Grizzly Peak Park, shortly before 2 p.m.

[Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) said someone [called 911](https://berkeleycrime.com/i/id/c741edef-0b11-4e16-8fb9-8d9d05fa1b60?ref=berkeleyscanner.com) to report a fight at a home on the block.

When officers arrived, they found the victim outside with a stab wound to the head and a human bite mark on the arm, authorities said.

The suspect, 17, was holding a large knife and refused to put it down, according to police.

The teenager ultimately complied with officer orders after a nine-minute standoff and negotiation, BPD said.

The victim was taken to the hospital, where he is stable, police said shortly before publication.

The teenager was assessed at the scene but did not require hospital transport, according to police. 

The parties were known to each other, but police declined to share how, citing privacy concerns.

The teenager will now be arrested, but the exact charges were not immediately available due to the ongoing investigation.

**Update, 5:45 p.m.** The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, robbery, vandalism and taking a phone to stop someone from calling for help, police said.
