# Alleged UC Berkeley sorority intruder has been arrested

A man who spent hours inside a [UC Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/uc-berkeley-crime/) sorority watching women sleep and possibly stealing their underwear has been arrested, police report.

The incident took place early Saturday morning in the 2300 block of Warring Street north of Channing Way, according to [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) and community members familiar with the situation.

The man went in and out of the sorority several times Saturday throughout the night from approximately 3-6 a.m.

Berkeley police recognized the suspect, who used to stay in a local homeless encampment, from prior contacts, authorities said.

Berkeley police have been actively working the case since getting the disturbing report Saturday. 

In the meantime, the sorority hired extra security as a precaution.

According to public records, a woman at the sorority called 911 after waking up at about 6:20 a.m. Saturday to find a stranger in her bedroom.

The neighborhood where the prowling happened is home to numerous UC Berkeley fraternities and sororities. 

The Scanner is working to learn more about the arrest, which took place Wednesday, and will update this story when more details become available.

**Update, 11:40 p.m.** The arrested man was identified as 45-year-old Courtney Alford, according to booking records.

It's not his first arrest. In addition to burglary, Alford also was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of committing new offenses while out on bail.

In January 2024, Alford was charged in Alameda County Superior Court with committing lewd acts on a child. The case remains active, according to court files.

He also has convictions for felony evasion, commercial burglary, grand theft and assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.

Alford is being held on a combined bail of $230,000 and is scheduled for arraignment Friday.
