Authorities have arrested the suspect in a recent shooting in West Berkeley, The Scanner has learned.

Berkeley police have so far declined to comment on the circumstances of the arrest, which took place Friday night in San Francisco.

Still: Days-long information blackouts like this are one reason we are very concerned about the move to encrypt Berkeley police radio traffic.

Full encryption is not required and more moderate alternatives exist — as other California police agencies have demonstrated.

Removing public access will make it much harder for all of us to get timely information about critical events. 

That will be especially true for breaking news, which we know is a priority for our readers.

The encryption vote is set for Tuesday night, Oct. 28\. We'll be there.
