The investigation began around 1:50 a.m. when someone called police to report a spate of gunfire near the Hope Center, in the 2000 block of Berkeley Way, according to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner. A witness indicated the shooting happened on the fourth floor of the building. [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) ultimately found evidence of gunfire in that area, an officer confirmed over the radio. The victim was not hurt and did not require medical transport, according to radio dispatches. Officers shut down the block and advised nearby residents to shelter in place while they brought in a negotiator and determined whether the shooter was still in the building. According to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner, police arrested one person, without incident, shortly before publication time. BPD reopened the block at about 3:30 a.m. Berkeley [has not had a shooting](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2025/06/02/shootings/berkeley-gunfire-map-shootings-2025/) since late June. Prior to Thursday, there had been [seven non-injury shootings](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/shootings/) in 2025 as well as a report of gunfire on the freeway and one [non-fatal police shooting](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/ricardo-ruiz/). There had been [21 shootings](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2024/08/26/shootings/berkeley-shootings-gunfire-map-2024/) as of this time last year, including six shootings with injuries and three that were fatal. This is a preliminary report. This story will be updated as more details become available. **Update, Sept. 11:** The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Ricardo Martinez. The shooting took place on his birthday. He has been charged with attempted murder and other crimes.
