# Yes, Berkeley did have a small earthquake Sunday morning

A magnitude 2.6 earthquake shook Berkeley early Sunday morning, the first temblor in the city in quite some time.

The quake's epicenter was just east of [UC Berkeley's](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/uc-berkeley-crime/) Clark Kerr track at a depth of 6.4 miles.

It was recorded a few minutes after 5 a.m., the [U.S. Geological Survey reported](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc75231202/executive?utm%5Fmedium=email&utm%5Fsource=ENS&utm%5Fcampaign=realtime).

There have been just six other [earthquakes in or near Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/earthquakes/) since Jan. 1, 2023, of magnitude 2.5 or greater, according to USGS data.

Other Bay Area earthquakes have also made their presence known in Berkeley in recent years, including a [magnitude 5.1 quake](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2022/10/25/disaster-preparedness/magnitude-5-earthquake-berkeley-san-jose/) east of San Jose in October 2022 and a [3.6 magnitude quake](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2022/12/17/disaster-preparedness/berkeley-earthquake/) in El Cerrito in December of the same year.

In October 2023, earthquakes in the Sacramento Delta ([4.2 magnitude](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2023/10/18/disaster-preparedness/magnitude-4-1-earthquake-isleton-sacramento-delta-felt-berkeley/)) and at the San Francisco airport ([3.7 magnitude](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2023/10/28/disaster-preparedness/sf-earthquake-shakes-berkeley/)) both were felt in Berkeley, in addition to two smaller quakes in Berkeley proper.
