The officer was identified as CDCR parole officer Joshua Lemont Byrd, a 40-year-old father of three. "This is a heartbreaking loss," the governor's office said. "Agent Byrd served with integrity and courage — and we’re forever grateful. We are keeping his family in our prayers and we join the men and women of CDCR in mourning this tragedy." It's the first line-of-duty loss for CDCR since 2018, according to the governor's office. About an hour ago, reporter Henry Lee identified the suspect on X as [Bryan Keith Hall](https://x.com/henrykleeKTVU/status/1946039758167421039?ref=berkeleyscanner.com), writing that he has a conviction for stabbing a man in the neck on Lakeshore Avenue in Oakland. According to court records reviewed by The Scanner, the case was originally charged in 2022 as attempted murder but was [reduced to assault with a deadly weapon](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VXDorrosAXjuJfix9MicTFutR95wBsg4/view?usp=sharing&ref=berkeleyscanner.com) in early January as part of a plea deal.
