Police in Berkeley are investigating two seemingly unrelated shootings Friday night: one, gunfire on the freeway, the other, the case of a man who showed up wounded at a local hospital.

Few details were available as of publication time but authorities did confirm they do not currently believe the incidents are linked.

The first call to come in, shortly after 8 p.m., involved a man, reportedly in his 40s, who was dropped off at Alta Bates Hospital in the [Elmwood neighborhood](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/elmwood-berkeley/) with a gunshot wound to the leg.

The [Berkeley Fire Department](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-fire-department/) transported him "Code 3," with lights and sirens, to Highland Hospital for treatment.

According to radio traffic reviewed by The Scanner, the man refused to cooperate with [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/), who are continuing to follow up on leads.

As officers were working to collect evidence in that case, BPD got a call about gunfire on the freeway near Ashby Avenue in [West Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/west-berkeley/) just before 8:30 p.m.

A witness told police she'd seen someone firing a gun "randomly" in the air out of their car window, according to radio traffic.

Berkeley police searched for evidence of gunfire near the Ashby off-ramp but did not immediately find anything.

The California Highway Patrol also responded to search for evidence and closed part of the freeway or Ashby off-ramp for a period of time to conduct the investigation.

The Scanner has asked the CHP for an update but had not heard back as of publication time.

There was also a [shooting on New Year's Eve](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2025/01/02/shootings/first-berkeley-shooting-2025-woman-detained/) that was reported on Jan. 1.

As of this time last year, there had been [two injury shootings](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/2024/08/26/shootings/berkeley-shootings-gunfire-map-2024/) in Berkeley, although one of them turned out to have been self-inflicted, police later determined.

This story will be updated if additional information becomes available.

**Update:** BPD later determined that the wounded man had been shot in Oakland. No further information about the freeway shooting has been released.
