According to the preliminary investigation, the rider veered off the road and struck some trash receptacles on the curb before losing control of his bike, police said. **Scroll down for an update to the story.** The rider was southbound on Adeline when the crash happened. Efforts to revive the rider failed at the scene. He was pronounced dead at about 12:35 a.m. Berkeley police closed the intersection and called in the department's Fatal Accident Investigation Team, which handles serious and fatal crashes. The incident was initially reported as a collision between the motorcycle rider and an AC Transit bus. But authorities spoke to the bus driver and reviewed bus security footage and confirmed that the bus was not involved. This story was updated after publication to reflect that determination. **Update, 2:20 p.m.** BPD said the deceased rider was a man in his 30s on a Vespa scooter. He collided with the curb line in the 2900 block of Adeline Street and sustained a head injury when he fell off the scooter.
