The suspect in a [fatal Berkeley shooting](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/homicide/) is now in custody after a weeks-long murder investigation by police, according to court papers.

On Wednesday, BPD arrested 57-year-old Steve Addison of Oakland after finding him near a food truck in the 800 block of 55th Street in North Oakland.

According to BPD, Addison initially ran from BPD's Special Response Team, which detained him after a brief foot chase.

Police say Addison killed Matthew Gullette, 55, of Alameda outside a halfway house at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and Ashby Avenue on July 3.

[Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) have not released a possible motive in the crime.

Officers found Gullette on the evening of July 3 near an entrance to the Martin Luther King Jr. House at MLK and Ashby.

He had sustained a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, some of the rooms in the halfway house "had recently been occupied by squatters."

During a search, officers found items belonging to the victim in one room and items related to the suspect in another.

BPD also noted in court papers that surveillance cameras had "captured much of what occurred… leading up to and following the shooting."
