Limited information was available as of publication time due to the ongoing investigation. But, according to public information reviewed by The Scanner, the collision took place at San Pablo Avenue and Cedar Street just after 1:30 a.m. The pedestrian was described as conscious and breathing after the crash. According to dispatch traffic, he was in the middle of the street with "debris everywhere" around him from a shopping cart he had been pushing. He was identified as Carl Robert Barron, 43, of Berkeley. Barron was subsequently arrested on suspicion of felony DUI causing injury and DUI with priors, among other allegations, according to records online. According to those records, Barron had a misdemeanor DUI conviction in 2010, which put him on probation for three years. He then had another misdemeanor DUI conviction in 2022, which placed him on probation through August 2025. In that incident, he was arrested by the Castro Valley CHP and found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.16, which is twice the legal limit, according to court records. Barron was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Alameda in 2012 and in Emeryville in 2018, but The Scanner could not find records of any associated charges filed. None of Barron's earlier DUI cases appear to have resulted in injuries to other people, according to available records. Barron is now being held in Berkeley Jail with a bail of $195,000, according to booking records. He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday. No information was available Saturday about the condition of the man who was hit but The Scanner will ask [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) for an update. **Update, July 1:** Police said the pedestrian was in the crosswalk when the driver, who was southbound on San Pablo, struck him. The pedestrian was a 43-year-old man with no permanent address, BPD said. No additional information was available as of publication time.
