# Man with knife confronts cops, put on psychiatric hold

Police used less-lethal rounds to take an armed man into custody Saturday afternoon in a busy [North Berkeley](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/north-berkeley/) neighborhood, authorities report.

Officers were initially asked to do a welfare check on a man with a knife who appeared to be in a psychiatric crisis on Vine Street east of Walnut Street, police said.

Shortly after police arrived, BPD said, the man stabbed at the windshield of a cruiser where an officer was sitting at about 2:15 p.m.

Police then called for Code 3 cover — emergency backup — from other officers in the city. 

Officers tried to negotiate with the man to de-escalate the situation, [Berkeley police](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) said.

In the end, BPD used less-lethal munitions to detain the man so he could be placed on a psychiatric hold. 

The man's name, age and city of residence were not available as of publication time.
