A 51-year-old Oakley man sustained serious injuries during a motorcycle crash in Berkeley on Thursday, authorities report.

The crash took place shortly after 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of Ashby Avenue, near Ninth Street, in West Berkeley, the [Berkeley Police Department](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) said.

Responding officers determined that the motorcyclist had been "traveling at an extremely high rate of speed" when a driver turned left in front of him, police said.

"The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the collision and became entangled in the rear passenger wheel well of the other vehicle," according to BPD.

The Oakley man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but was expected to survive.

Unsafe speed has been the most prevalent factor causing injury crashes in Berkeley this year, according to Berkeley police data, followed by unsafe turning and failure to yield.
