# Woman coming home robbed on Roosevelt in central Berkeley

A woman in her 20s was violently robbed by several people after getting dropped off in central Berkeley by an Uber on Friday night, authorities report.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Friday in the 2100 block of Roosevelt Avenue (near Addison Street), the [Berkeley Police Department](https://www.berkeleyscanner.com/topic/berkeley-police-department/) said. 

Several men approached the woman from behind on a flight of stairs and tried to take her backpack and cellphone, police said.

The men dragged the woman down the stairs as she held onto her property and tried not to let it go, police said.

The men held the woman down and covered her mouth when she tried to scream for help, according to BPD. They punched her repeatedly in the face and head. 

The commotion alerted witnesses who startled the assailants. 

The group managed to take the woman's backpack and fled in a white, small to mid-size SUV, Berkeley police said.

They drove east on Addison Street from Roosevelt Avenue. 

The woman was left with injuries to her head and arms but did not require ambulance transport, police said.

There have been at least 96 robberies in Berkeley in about as many days so far this year, according to CrimeMapping.com.
